There’s an endless fascination for the underground nightlife of prohibition-era America or turn-of-the-century Europe. While strict moral codes and class systems existed in ‘polite society’, there was a whole other seedy, sexy and slightly taboo moment in time happening in parallel.
It’s this legacy of good old-fashioned law breaking in the name of a good time that inspires the Piper’s Playhouse. Located at Crown Melbourne, the limited season is sponsored by Piper-Heidsieck Champagne, so there’s a strong theme of red throughout.
Crown has never been my particular vibe, so it was a pleasant surprise to be completely immersed in the venue, without the sound of the pokies infiltrating.
From the moment you walk into Piper’s Playhouse, the atmosphere shifts into a kitsch but classy experience. There are things to see, play, and engage with as you are transported through the maze of mirrors and enjoy a peep show behind a velvet curtain.
The main performance is an alternating series of short pieces, from magic to bubble blowing and contortion to burlesque, and is hosted by drag superstar Jimi the Kween.
Opening night included contortionist Soliana Ersie performing some of the most body-bending acrobatics alongside former Miss Burlesque Australia, Diesel Darling, who has a gloriously playful energy that is more cheeky than dirty and returns burlesque to its titillating-not-tawdry roots.
The evening is soundtracked by the Jake Army Trio, who keep the vibes high between acts without overwhelming the venue. It’s an intimate cabaret setup, with small cosy tables for date nights and larger booths for the rowdier groups.
At the conclusion of the main performances, Piper’s Playhouse makes way for a piano bar, where guests are encouraged to request songs and dance the night away. On opening night, local favourite Trevor Jones was at the helm of the piano and the revolving stage, performing hot takes on pop hits.
While it’s a more sanitised, safer version than what I imagine vintage Montmartre might have been, Piper’s Playhouse is an excellent night out. Whether you’re on a date or out with friends, the performers will delight, infusing a little bit of frivolous joy back into your life.
